A house concert that originated in a pianist’s living room in 2002 has evolved into an annual event known as “The July Festival,” which is now expanding nationwide. Organized by The House Concert, this festival will run daily throughout July at the Artist’s House in Daehangno, Seoul, while also reaching audiences across Korea.
The festival will showcase 31 performances with 237 participants, including renowned musicians like pianists Park Jae-hong and Park Jong-hae, violinists Kim Hyun-mi and Baek Ju-young, and cellists Lee Jeong-ran and Shim Jun-ho. Beyond Seoul, 13 performances are scheduled at 10 locations nationwide, including Haman, Busan, Daejeon, Cheongju, and Seosan.
Opening with Stravinsky’s 1918 work “Histoire du Soldat” on July 1, the festival will culminate with “The Rite of Spring” by the Russian composer, under conductor Jin Sol on July 31. The House Concert, initiated by composer and pianist Park Chang-soo in 2002, has served as a launchpad for numerous musicians, including violinist Chung Kyung-wha and pianists Kim Sun-wook, Cho Seong-jin, and Lim Yun-chan.
Since 2008, these concerts have been held in various venues, finding a regular spot at the Artist’s House from December 2014. The July Festival, introduced in 2020, has delved into comprehensive programs focusing on a single composer annually. This year’s theme, “Stravinsky and 20th-Century Russian Composers,” will spotlight works by Stravinsky alongside pieces by Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Schnittke, Gliere, and Weinberg.
Renowned for his influence in 20th-century music and diverse art forms like ballet, Stravinsky’s works at the festival will showcase his stylistic evolution. Ticket prices for the festival performances range from 40,000 won to 100,000 won. The intimate setting of the house concerts aims to bridge the gap between performers and audiences, creating a unique experience.
This expansion of The July Festival across Korea signifies the growing appreciation for classical music and the efforts of artists to bring it to diverse audiences. The festival’s lineup of talented musicians promises a month filled with exceptional performances, enriching the cultural landscape and celebrating the legacy of legendary composers.
