Hong Kong pianist Aristo Sham made history by winning the prestigious Cliburn competition in the United States. Sham, 29, clinched the gold medal and a cash prize of US$100,000 after outperforming five other finalists at the 17th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas. This victory marked a significant milestone for Sham, becoming the first pianist from Hong Kong to achieve this accolade.
Sham’s triumph also secured him a three-year career management programme, a live album by Platoon Records, and promotional support from Neiman Marcus. As part of the management programme, Sham is set to embark on concert tours across the US and internationally. The competition also recognized Vitaly Starikov from Israel/Russia with the silver medal and Evren Ozel from the US with the bronze. Additionally, Sham received the Carla and Kelly Thompson Audience Award, accompanied by a cash prize of US$2,500.
Selected from a pool of 340 applicants from 45 countries and regions, Sham was among 28 pianists competing in the 2025 Cliburn competition. His final performance included pieces by Mendelssohn and Brahms, showcasing his musical prowess and emotional depth. In an interview, Sham expressed his appreciation for Mendelssohn’s composition, highlighting its whimsical and virtuosic nature.
Sham’s musical journey began at the age of three under his mother’s guidance. He started participating in competitions and concerts at the age of 10, eventually graduating from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts. He further honed his skills at the New England Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and accomplished pianist.
A seasoned performer, Sham has graced stages across Asia, Europe, and the US, including collaborations with esteemed orchestras such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. His dedication to music has garnered recognition from audiences worldwide, including British royalty and former Chinese leader Hu Jintao.
