Pianist Kim Saehyun, aged 18, emerged victorious at the esteemed Long-Thibaud International Competition in France, clinching the Audience Prize, Critics’ Prize, and Paris Special Prize in March. Following this remarkable achievement, Kim addressed the media on June 26 at the Circle Hall of Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul. As he gracefully sat down at the piano, his shy demeanor gave way to a mesmerizing performance that captivated the audience with his delicate touch and refined musicality.
Kim’s approach to music transcends mere technical prowess; he aims to immerse himself completely in the music, eschewing the desire to impress audiences with flashy techniques. Rather, he seeks to touch the hearts of listeners on a personal level, sharing his own narrative through his performances. His sincerity and genuine passion for music shine through, emphasizing authenticity over showmanship.
The young pianist’s career skyrocketed following his victories in Paris. He was the sole pianist invited to perform at a music concert on Victory in Europe Day, playing a Chopin nocturne in front of the iconic Arc de Triomphe. Subsequently, he is set to hold a solo concert at Champ de Mars on Bastille Day and perform at the La Roque d’Antheron International Piano Festival, solidifying his status as a rising star in the classical music scene.
Alain Lanceron, President of Warner Classics, lauded Kim’s talent and maturity despite his youth, expressing plans to collaborate on an album to be released by the end of the following year. Despite his packed schedule of performances worldwide, Kim remains committed to his academic pursuits, pursuing a master’s degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory of Music and a bachelor’s in English literature at Harvard University.
Kim’s dedication to his craft extends beyond the realm of music, as he continuously seeks to push the boundaries of artistic expression. When asked about potential regrets over missing out on a typical teenage experience, Kim expressed gratitude for the fulfillment music brings to his life, viewing it as a worthy trade-off for certain adolescent experiences. He remains steadfast in his decision to forgo entering additional competitions, preferring to focus on authentic self-expression through his music.
The Long-Thibaud International Competition, established in 1943, serves as a platform to recognize young musical talents aged 16-33 in piano, violin, and vocal performance. This year, the judges unanimously crowned Kim as the winner, acknowledging his exceptional skills that set him apart from his fellow competitors. As Kim continues to make waves in the classical music world, his commitment to artistic integrity and genuine expression sets him apart as a pianist to watch in the years to come.
