Award-winning pianist Lee Martelli-Wood is set to enchant audiences with a series of free ‘Microjazz’ concerts across Auckland in celebration of New Zealand Music Month’s 25th anniversary. The Auckland Council-backed initiative showcases Martelli-Wood’s talent and pays homage to renowned composer Christopher Norton.

Martelli-Wood’s musical journey, from practicing Microjazz as a child to performing duets with Norton, culminates in this unique concert series. Following the success of online concerts during the pandemic, Martelli-Wood recognized the broad appeal of Norton’s compositions, particularly the Rock and Latin Preludes.

The concept of a mini-tour featuring “great New Zealand music” emerged last year and received support from the Creative Communities Scheme. This marks Martelli-Wood’s debut as a funded solo artist, allowing her to bring her vision to life and collaborate with various partners and venues.
Supported by SOUNZ, the Center for New Zealand Music, Martelli-Wood is also running a young composers’ competition, with winning pieces to be featured in a booklet and performed at the concerts. Federation, a local fashion brand, has joined as a partner, providing wardrobe support for the pianist.
Anticipating large turnouts, Martelli-Wood invites audiences to engage actively during the concerts, even offering them the opportunity to play percussion alongside her piano performance. The east Auckland Microjazz concert, scheduled for May 16 at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga, promises an evening of musical delight.

As Martelli-Wood prepares to share her passion for music with diverse audiences, the project embodies a fusion of talent, community support, and creative expression. By intertwining classical elements with contemporary flair, these concerts serve as a testament to the vibrancy and richness of New Zealand’s musical landscape.
Through her collaboration with Norton and the support of various partners, Martelli-Wood’s concerts not only showcase her piano prowess but also highlight the symbiotic relationship between music, art, and community engagement. By championing local talent and fostering creativity, these performances contribute to the cultural tapestry of Auckland and beyond.
With a blend of nostalgia, innovation, and artistic collaboration, Martelli-Wood’s Microjazz concerts offer a harmonious celebration of New Zealand’s musical heritage. Audiences can expect an evening of melodic enchantment and rhythmic engagement, underscoring the enduring power of music to unite, inspire, and uplift.
