Pianist Yunchan Lim is set to release his upcoming album, “Tchaikovsky: The Seasons,” on August 22 under Decca Classics, where he contemplates mortality by transforming the 12 miniatures into a reflection on the final year of a human life, rather than a mere representation of the calendar year. The album’s first track, “June. Barcarolle,” was recently released on streaming platforms.
This album follows Lim’s earlier release this year, a live album of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 from his remarkable performance at the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition when he was just 18 years old. Lim’s talent was hailed as “once in a generation” by The Guardian, drawing comparisons to renowned pianists like Argerich and Rachmaninoff himself.
Lim’s unique interpretation of “The Seasons” commences with “By the Hearth,” a piece symbolizing the dwindling fire of life. He describes the emotional journey within the music, from reminiscing about the past to finding hope in new experiences, culminating in acceptance and bidding farewell to a day that will never return.
Throughout the 2023–24 season, Lim has showcased this conceptual approach to “The Seasons” to global acclaim. Critics have praised the beauty and precision of his performances, with French magazine Diapason remarking on the unreal quality of his playing and Dutch outlet Die Nieuwe Muze lauding him as a sincere musician who deeply connects with his audience.
“Tchaikovsky: The Seasons” is scheduled for release on August 22, with additional singles expected to be unveiled leading up to the album launch. Lim’s introspective exploration of mortality through the music promises to offer listeners a profound and moving experience.
