The Seventeenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition concluded with great fanfare at the Van Cliburn Concert Hall and Bass Performance Hall, where the winners were revealed after two and a half weeks of remarkable performances. The event, held from May 21 to June 7, 2025, captivated a global audience of over 20 million viewers across 145 countries.
The prestigious Gold Medal was awarded to Aristo Sham, a talented pianist from Hong Kong, China, aged 29. Along with the gold medal, Aristo also received a substantial cash prize of $100,000, the Van Cliburn Winner’s Cup, and a range of career-enhancing opportunities, including concert tours and a live album produced by Platoon Records.
Vitaly Starikov, hailing from Israel and Russia at the age of 30, clinched the Silver Medal, earning a cash award of $50,000 and a similar career management package to further his musical journey. Meanwhile, Evren Ozel, a 26-year-old pianist from the United States, secured the Bronze Medal, accompanied by a cash prize of $25,000 and career support.
Yangrui Cai from China, aged 24, stood out for the Best Performance of a New Work, receiving the Beverley Taylor Smith Award and a $5,000 prize. Evren Ozel, the Bronze Medalist, also excelled in the Mozart Concerto category, earning an additional $5,000 for his outstanding performance.
Special discretionary awards were granted to Mikhail Kambarov from Russia, Jonas Aumiller from Germany, and Alice Burla from Canada, recognizing their exceptional talents with cash prizes. The Audience Award, determined by public vote, went to Aristo Sham, adding $2,500 to his accolades.
Notably, the remaining finalists and semifinalists were also acknowledged for their remarkable skills. Carter Johnson from Canada/United States, Philipp Lynov from Russia, and Angel Stanislav Wang from the United States received the Kleinheinz Family Finalist Award. The quarterfinalists and preliminary round competitors were not overlooked, each receiving cash awards for their contributions to the competition.
