A man in Tasmania is embarking on a unique and charitable endeavor by pushing a 255kg piano up Mount Wellington. Kelvin Smith, known for his unconventional piano performances in remote locations, aims to raise funds for Speak Up!, a mental health charity in Tasmania, through this musical climb.
The piano, an 88-key Albert Fahr upright from Germany, has been securely mounted on a specially designed trolley with rubber tires and multiple braking systems. Thanks to the support of Australian industrial manufacturer Richmond Rolling Solutions, the custom-built trolley features a robust 4mm aluminum-plate cradle and chassis, ensuring the piano’s safety during the ascent.
Kelvin, operating under the alias “A Piano of Tasmania,” views this challenge as a metaphor for the struggles faced by individuals living with mental illness. By pushing the piano up the challenging 21km route to the summit of Mount Wellington, he hopes to symbolize the uphill battles many people endure daily. The goal is not only to raise funds but also to spark conversations about mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding it.
Mount Wellington, located near Hobart, presents a formidable challenge with its narrow, winding road that ascends over 1200m with a steep gradient. Kelvin has meticulously prepared for this feat, allowing himself just over 21 hours to complete the arduous 10km climb. If successful, he may even set a record for the fastest ascent on four wheels along this iconic route.
The Speak Up, Stay Chatty charity, which promotes open discussions about mental health, stands to benefit from this extraordinary initiative. Kelvin’s hope is that the sight of him pushing a piano uphill will not only raise funds but also bring a smile to people’s faces, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and support.
For those interested in supporting Kelvin’s musical climb and the cause it represents, donations can be made to the charity. As Kelvin embarks on this challenging journey, his determination to conquer Mount Wellington with a piano in tow serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and creativity in raising awareness for mental health issues.
