About the Author
Born on April 10, 1934, in Bellingham, Washington, James Bastien was nurtured in a home where his father, Clarence, played the violin and his mother, Dorothy, cultivated words as a writer and high school Latin and journalism teacher. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family relocated to Portland, Oregon, where Jim launched his piano studies under the guidance of Frances Mulkey North. His further studies led him to the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.
A proud alumnus of Southern Methodist University, Jim earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the institution. He held esteemed positions at Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and participated in the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.
In 1960, in New Orleans, Jim met his future wife Jane Smisor. Together, they performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. Concurrently, Jim distinguished himself as a Columbia Artist accompanist, sharing the stage with luminaries like Richard Tucker and John Alexander.
It was during this period that Jim and Jane began writing music to meet their students’ needs, marking the inception of the Bastien piano books. These books, which have inspired countless piano students and teachers, have been globally published by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are currently available in 14 languages.
