A skilled piano technician, Scott Higgins, plays a crucial role in ensuring that musicians at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music and the Performing Arts Center in the University of Georgia hit the perfect note. Coming from a lineage of piano technicians, Higgins embarked on this career path after attending a trade school in Boston, following the footsteps of his family members. Initially considering a different career, Higgins found his passion in piano maintenance and repair, eventually becoming the lead piano technician at UGA.
Over the years, Higgins has honed his skills working with prestigious institutions like the New England Conservatory and the Boston Symphony, before joining the University of Oregon, the University of Memphis, and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Drawn to UGA’s status as an All-Steinway School, Higgins has significantly contributed to enhancing the university’s piano inventory by replacing 40% of the existing pianos. His recent accomplishment includes overseeing the acquisition of 30 new pianos, a remarkable feat for any music school.
Recognized for his outstanding service, Higgins was awarded the Franklin College Staff Excellence in Service Award in 2021, underscoring his dedication to maintaining high-quality pianos for both students and visiting artists. His daily routine involves meticulous checks on Steinway pianos used by performers and students, ensuring optimal performance. Collaborating with colleague Tony Graves, Higgins meticulously inspects practice room pianos, offering tuning and repairs as needed.
Higgins emphasizes the complexity of pianos, highlighting the intricate coordination of over 12,000 parts within the instrument. He stresses the importance of precise regulation for pianos to respond accurately to a pianist’s touch, underscoring the technical expertise required for his role. Additionally, Higgins underscores the significance of building trust with renowned pianists by exuding confidence and professionalism during his interactions with them.
Beyond his technical duties, Higgins actively engages in educating others about pianos. He participated in Piano Day, an event designed to educate high school students about pianos and foster interest in UGA’s piano programs. Higgins believes that increasing awareness about piano maintenance is crucial, as many musicians are not well-versed in the inner workings of their instruments.
Outside his work commitments, Higgins enjoys leisure activities like mountain biking and acting classes with his wife. Despite his busy schedule, he finds time to pursue his passion for acting, featuring in various productions. Looking ahead, Higgins aspires to enhance UGA’s musical offerings by acquiring specific Steinway piano models, aiming to elevate the school’s musical performance quality to unparalleled heights.
